Cornell University Student and Campus Life serves all students – undergraduate, graduate, and professional – and strives to promote an educational environment where you can thrive in pursuit of your academic and personal goals. Our 14 fraternities and sororities, like those at other institutions, emphasize leadership development, community service, and relationship building. Today, we strive to continue that ethos. The Cornell Sorority & Fraternity community dates to the first months of University operation during the autumn of 1868.

About Sorority & Fraternity Life. I am a member of Greek life here at Cornell and if I were you, I wouldn't be so quick to group the houses into tiers. We heard from alumni who spoke of their positive Cornell Greek life experiences and who implored us to protect that system, even as we considered meaningful change. Cornell's co-founder and first president, Andrew Dickson White, was a strong promoter of fraternal organizations as a means of teaching self-governance to students. Many chapters are among the oldest of their respective national organizations, as evidenced by the proliferation of Alpha-series chapters. However, a number of distinguishing features set Greek life at Cornell apart.

We also heard from alumni who had positive Greek life experiences and who implored us to radically alter the system; in some cases, even imploring us to abolish it altogether. The leadership, self-governance, integrity, and interpersonal skills that are developed, combined with the outside of the classroom educational experiences are … One of the biggest parts of my college experience, and the experience of about a third of the Cornell undergraduate population, was being a part of Greek life.
