The primary focus of para-equestrian sport is to provide educational and competitive opportunities for athletes with physical disabilities. While Para Equestrian disciplines were originally segregated, they now are integrated in international sport.
Para-dressage has been a regular fixture at the Paralympics since 1996.
Conducted under the same basic rules, but with Athletes classified according to the level of their impairment, the horse has to perform at a walk, trot and canter, and all tests are ridden from memory and follow a prescribed pattern of movements. Para Dressage is the sport of Dressage, the highest expression of horse training, for Athletes with an impairment.
In the sport, the rider must prompt his or her horse to perform movements – such as steps, trots and canters – and freestyle routines choreographed to music.
