The palace.

Originally built at the west end of Forres high street the castle no longer remains but the area still bears the name ‘Castlehill’. Situated just off the A96 about 27 miles east of the Highland capital of Inverness, the town’s impressive parks and gardens with outstanding floral sculptures have led to many awards from the prestigious Britain and Scotland in Bloom competitions. The castle then disappears from the records, but was probably destroyed by the Earl of Huntly during the suppression of the Black Douglases in the mid 15th century.

Forres is one of Scotland’s oldest small towns, and also one of its most attractive. The local abbey was plundered by the Wolf of Badenoch.

The Public Park is on the site where the Royal Forres Castle would have stood c.900. Forres is one of Scotland’s oldest towns, steeped in history, thought to be shown as ‘Varris’ on maps dating back 2000 years. Forres was awarded Royal Burgh status in1140 and mentioned in Shakespeare’s Macbeth as the location of Duncan’s Castle. MacBeth was immediately crowned at Scone to legitimise his position and he ruled over Moray from his castle in Forres. Royal burghs were founded by the Kings of Scots of the 12th century to encourage trade and economic improvement. The castle is also located near a small hill known locally as ‘Macbeth’s Hillock’ where the Shakespearean hero is said to have encountered the Weird Sisters. Visit the Castle page to find out more about some of the most interesting castles around the area.

A royal castle was present in the area from at least 900 AD, and around 1140 AD Forres became a royal burgh. Forres Castle was taken from the English and burned out by Andrew Murray in 1297, and remained in ruins for half a century until rebuilt in stone by the Earls of Moray.
