Tau proteins are encoded by the microtubule-associated protein tau gene on chromosome 17q21, which consists of 21 exons, 11 of which are spliced into at least 12 different (including six main) isoforms that are expressed in the brain and range from 352 to 441 amino acids in size. Each repeat consists of stretches of a highly conserved 18 residues that are imperfectly repeated three times in the fetal tau protein and four times in the adult specific form [ 35 ].
